PITCHFORK
Though Twins sounds like a duo the project is actually one man: Matt Weiner, who operates out of Brooklyn and is also a member of the hazy synth-pop act Best Hits. Under Twins (which we kind of hope is taken from the 1988 Arnold Schwarzenegger/ Danny DeVito film), Weiner creates warped soundscapes filled with eerie sounds and harsh noise. "Drive By Digital Ghost", from Twins' The Other Side Of cassette that's due for release this summer, adds syrup-slow vocal moans and no-wave guitars for a particularly nocturnal effect. AQUARIUS
“Yet another sonic time machine trip, right back to the mid eighties, and as usual, you find yourself transported directly to the credits of a VHS tape in the bargain section of the local video store, or right into a montage of various characters getting ready for the big dance / race to raise money to save the school / rendezvous with the cute girl you’ve always had a crush on. It’s so strange how these youngsters can so masterfully channel a time before they were even born, but then there are plenty of people who are channeling the sixties and seventies, maybe it’s more a question of WHY. The decade better forgotten, whether it be fashion or music, but once again, given enough space, we have to say, as reimagined by this new generation, this stuff sounds pretty dang good.

Twins is the latest in a long line of new outfits channeling the sound and spirit of eighties pop music. Zombi, Majeure, Umberto, Outer Limits Recordings, Puro Instinct, Dylan Ettinger, Autre Ne Veut, Craft Spells, Innercity, Greatest Hits, Gatekeeper, Soft Metals, well now you can add Twins, aka one man band Matt Weiner, to that list, but of that whole bunch, we’re definitely feeling like Twins might be the weirdest, and at the same time, the most genuinely eighties sounding of the bunch. Or maybe it’s just how we wish music in the eighties sounded, or how we remember it, whether it’s true or not. Woozy doomy warbly sci-fi funk, crappy Casio disco, warped druggy new wave electro pop. The drums programmed and reverbed, woozy guitar jangle, throbbing synth funk bass, and the vocals, warped and sexy, a whispery croon, heavily effected, the pitch control seemingly on the fritz, slipping into crazy falsetto one second, deep bellow croons the next, the perfect match for the throbbing pulsing neon new wave surrounding it. Unlike the dancey grooves and haunting Carpenter soundtracks of many of the other eighties revivalists, Twins is more concerned with pop music, this is like a glance into some alternate universe, where eighties MTV continued on into the future virtually unchanged, just becoming more and more damaged and fractured and fantastically freaky as it’s broadcast across time and space. We’re definitely reminded on fucked up pop weirdos like Gary War and Ariel Pink, but if anything, this takes those already fucked up sounds, and adds a whole other level of new wave cabaret drama, transforming a mere exercise in romantic retroism, into something totally and dementedly inspired.Released on the Synth Series sub label of the mighty Rural Fauna, and of course very very limited.”

“Shocking outsider synth-pop engagement from Twins, aka Matt Weiner. ‘The Other Side’ is only the 2nd vinyl release from the prolific Belgian label Ruralfaune (following Dylan Ettinger’s acclaimed Digitalis co-prod ‘Cutters’ on their SYNTH series) and the very first we or most anyone else has heard from this guy. We can tell you precisely jack-squat about him because there’s so little info available, but in much the same fashion as the mindblowing Autre Ne Veut LP, the combination of scant background and incredible music proves to be a powerfully seductive blend. With his palette of faded and foisty plastic synths, scarily authentic drums, jangling guitar, wryly affected vocals and woozy melodic chops Twins clearly inhabits that “other” zone which veered off from 1986 into an alternate future where everybody administered their own psychotherapy through electronic pop music. The eleven songs on ‘The Other Side Of’ retain their bookmarks from classic Factory, 4AD and LTM releases, but their surreal psychedelic proclivities are far more impressionistic; vocals drawled in vaguely familiar styles and melodic arrangements clouded with the mist of memory to sound vividly phantasmagorical. You’ll be checking your sh*tty casio to check we’re still even in 2010 when experiencing the gunky doom funk of ‘Drive By Digital Ghost’, the soggy silicone soul dystopia of ‘Run Away (From Me)’ or the Coil-esque narcotic haze of ‘Waiting’, while the uncertain emotional message of ‘What’s Wrong With Me?’ will strike a chord with anyone following the sleights of Sam Meringue’s multifarious operatives. We can see ourselves spending a LOT more time with this LP. Highly recommended to fans of Outer Limits Recordings, Gary War, or Autre Ne Veut!”

OMG VINYL
“Here’s a highly anticipated new LP from Ruralflame, and the first release from their Synth series get a vinyl pressing.  Already named an album of the year by some influential blogs, Twins’ “The Other Side Of” is a pure slice of throwback retro synth-pop.  If you dug what Ruralflame did with their Dylan Ettinger release awhile back, you’ll probably love this too (if you’re nervous, you can listen to the whole thing on Bandcamp)...”

SO THE WIND WON'T BLOW IT ALL AWAY

2010
The out of time way is the way of peace of mind.
(englikhtonian version)
it was 5 p.m and I should have stay at my post - the Office - to finalize things things things... the word escapes me. plans? or similar. I was not there. I was no more. or that's what my thoughts to me dictate. where is the truth - the real thing? here or on the other side where it seems I was someone. the wind rose, and with It, the song of the voice-track inside :"listen to the word the messengers send..."
a Messenger - one was in the room where I was at the now moment. He brought a record to me : "Twins:The Other Side of...""

DON'T DIE WONDERING
"One of the artists who incessantly surprise and take me higher is Twins. Here’s a new track that builds on his loose coldwave-inspired aesthetic, amassing along with other recent tracks to an alien and innovative statement on the classic rocks and synth-pops of our dreams. It’s off an upcoming full length album with a name that made me break into chuckles the first time I heard it: Twins - The Other Side Of…, which will be out on the always visually arresting Ruralfaune this summer."

THROUGH THE DIAMOND DOOR
"Twins features really spacey drone/synth stuff that can venture into some weird territoy. A killer album."
